Brown Global Health Initiative (GHI)

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is a multidisciplinary university-wide effort to reduce health inequalities among underserved populations locally and worldwide through education, research, service and development of partnerships. With current projects and programs in 33 countries - 28 of which are in developing countries - Brown is particularly well-positioned to expand and to accelerate these efforts through the Global Health Initiative. Under the guidance of Edward J. Wing, MD, Dean of the Division of Biology and Medicine and Susan Cu-Uvin, MD, GHI Director, the Initiative encompasses a wide range of practitioners and researchers across medicine, public health, biomedical research, social science, and engineering to provide sustainable solutions in partnership with communities and institutions in Africa, India, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

The Global Health Initiative builds upon model programs that already are highly successful endeavors. The Initiative's centerpiece is the Interdisciplinary Framework in Global Health Program. Supported by a 2008 educational grant from the Fogarty International Center at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the Framework in Global Health Program encourages students and faculty to engage in interdisciplinary global health activities. The Program supports global health scholarships for students and medical trainees, and provides funding for curriculum development grants to faculty who are developing coursework that brings global health content to bear on the subject matter of the course. Successful applicants receive up to $3,500 to support global health research, service, and advocacy activities directly linked to Brown University faculty scholarly projects. Several recent graduates have also participated in the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows Program at Brown-affiliated sites around the globe.
