Professional Development
Beginning in the first year, residents meet with the program director and faculty to discuss career goals. Upon entry into the program, interns are assigned faculty advisors to aid them in career planning and resident advisors to help transition them from medical school to residency. The program allows residents sufficient flexibility in their second and third years to pursue individual areas of interest and need.
Professional development is viewed by the faculty as an ongoing process through which residents work on career and personal goals. There are three educational components: clinical teaching seminars, critical appraisal seminars and professional development seminars. Each seminar series is conducted by a faculty member of the division and has established goals and objectives for its curricular activity.
New in 2008: We received a grant from the Lifespan Graduate Medical Education Office to create a Professionalism Curriculum for the 1st Year GIM residents. Our curriculum includes eight different topics, including understanding the U.S. health care system, exploring conflict of interest, maintaining physician wellness, caring for the disenfranchised/underserved, and physicians and advocacy. We will be evaluating the curriculum with the goal of dissemination to the many Lifespan residencies.
Board Review
A weekly board review seminar is conducted by chief medical residents throughout the year.
